An SR22 filing is a procedure for filing your DUI insurance with your state department of motor vehicles office. It’s the process of actually filling out the form with them forming the guarantee that you have the required high risk DUI auto insurance which is required after
conviction.
The SR22 is required to be kept on file at the DMV for a minimum of 3 (three)years and could be possibly longer depending on the circumstances of your offense. It is a type of high risk auto insurance that came about because the state decided that people with drunk driving convictions were a danger on the roadways. They determined that in order to re-acquaint those offenders with the driving public they would need to be assured that they would carry a specific amount of coverage due to the increased risk that these very same DUI offenders have the potential to re-offend and possibly cause bodily harm or property damage.
